On Performing as an Immigrant (2025)

An anti-performance about immigration, surveillance, America, and capitalism. After being told to take my flags from Colonização Cultural outside for public activations or performances, I had to keep coming to the unfortunate conclusion that I really couldn’t safely get away with any version of that. Carrying a big Brazilian flag with the McDonald’s or Disney logo on it on my back would make me a target for ICE or the National Guard, both of which were heavily patrolling Chicago at the time. Even now, this video isn’t public. I’ve never posted it openly on YouTube or Instagram or any of those platforms. It has only ever been screened once during my solo exhibit “Not in America, Through.”

If you are interested in sharing this video, I thank you but request you only share it with friends in the form of this YouTube link. Alternatively, I am always happy to do screenings of this piece in alternative art spaces, performance/film festivals, or galleries/cultural institutions.
